Importing Yahoo Mail and Contacts

Import email and contacts from another email provider

If you're switching to Gmail from another email provider like Yahoo!, Hotmail, or AOL, Gmail has a handy tool to help you move over your old emails and contacts. If you also want to avoid having to check your mail in two places, this feature also enables you to forward messages from your previous email provider to your Gmail account for 30 days.

This tool doesn't work for other Gmail accounts. Use mail fetcher to get mail from another Gmail account instead.

To get started, follow the steps below. Before you begin, keep in mind that you'll need to have access to the other email account for this process to work:

  1. Click the gear icon  in the top right-hand corner of your inbox, then selectSettings.
  2. Under the Accounts and Import tab, click the Import mail and contacts link.
  3. This will start a setup flow. After you finish, it may take some time for it to import, but you can check the status of your import by going back to the the Accounts and Import tab on the Settings page.

Note: If you're using Google Apps and don't see this setting, contact your administrator to enable users to import mail from Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, or other webmail or POP accounts. For more information, click here. The import will only migrate messages you've received, not messages you've sent.
